The foundation of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the cultivation of mindfulness – clear, non-judgmental attention to the present moment – with regard to the ongoing experience of body, feelings, emotions, and mind. Designed by Job Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., MBSR consists of 8 weekly sessions and a one-day silent retreat. Various mindfulness tools are learned and practiced in a group context with an emphasis on personal journey. These two perspectives, personal and group, are not seen as separate sources of wisdom. When we are fully in the present moment we naturally deepen into the experience of our life and open to interconnectedness to the people and world around us. In this way the MBSR course is both a powerful medicine for personal stress as well as a path towards establishing a healthy society.
